Vadasi yadi kinchidapi (Priye Charusheele)

Vadasi yadi kinchidapi (Priye Charusheele)

12th century poet Jayadeva, famous for his Gita Govindam, once sat down to compose an ashtapadi (a poem which is a set of eight couplets). As he was writing it, a particular verse came to his mind.

Smara garala khandanam mama shirasi mandanam
dehi pada pallavam udaaram
Jwalati mayi daaruno madana kadanaanalo
Haratu tadupaahita vikaaram

Which roughly translates to Krishna addressing Radha as follows :
Oh Radha, put out the fire of our longing by placing your tender feet on My head ! .

Jayadeva stopped. How could anyone, even Radha Rani, place their feet on the head of the Supreme Lord Krishna, master of the universe ? It didn’t seem acceptable. He almost felt guilty of having such a thought come to his mind. He put his pen down and went to take a shower.

Within a few minutes, he came back, much to his wife’s surprise and sat down at his desk to finish the verse.

Later, he was again spotted with a change of clothes by his wife who was by then clearly confused. She asked him why he changed. A puzzled Jayadeva replied he was just getting back from the shower. His wife was even more confused and said she had just seen him at his desk finishing the incomplete verse. Jayadeva rushed to his desk only to find the verse he had in mind written on the palm leaf before him!!!!.

His eyes welled with tears when he realized it was none other than Krishna himself who had taken Jayadeva’s form and completed the verse, validating Jayadeva’s thoughts, devotion and even the love between Radha and Krishna :)
